To Join the Orgy Porgy

A couple of stories came to my attention today. One was the decision of California to require a verbal yes at every stage of sexual activity on their college campuses. And if that doesn’t work, they will toughen the law, requiring a “yes, oh yes!” at every stage of the proceedings.

Certain tropes are like indestructible viruses. What will it take to get a super-vaccine that will knock out the notion that liberals have even the slightest concern for personal liberty? They have said ad nauseam they want the government out of our bedrooms — all while regulating every detail of that bedroom’s set up, from the spacing of the sheetrock screws down to the unremovable mattress tag — and people have nonetheless come to believe that they want the government out of our bedrooms. Comes now Jerry Brown, sending his minions to fan out with clipboards, so that they may stand around dorm room beds to exhort the participants to speak up. They have a checklist to maintain.

They justify this foolishness because, they say, there is rape epidemic on campus. They say, also ad nauseam, that one in five women will be the victim of a sexual assault during her time at college. Now if that were even remotely true, how would it not be an argument for parents not to send their daughters to college? How would it not be an argument for daughters to refuse to go? Why has there not been a dramatic upsurge of enrollment in all-women colleges? The answer is that some people use statistics that rhyme with mogus, dogus, and pogus.

Liberals are coercion monkeys. But we have this trope that says they believe in personal freedom. Yeah, well. Anybody who believes that they actually do care about liberty has been a victim of the old trope-a-dope ploy.

The other story was about how an administrative judge (note we are dealing with an executive martinet, not a regular judge) determined that a Kentucky printer was not allowed to refuse business that was promoting gay pride.

Now look at what is happening here. Evangelical printers, cake bakers, florists, and photographers (and other professions to come) are being singled out and targeted because of convictions they have about sexual matters. They are being pressured, hectored, fined, put out of business, so that they will drop their sexual convictions and join the orgy porgy. Liberals don’t exhibit the slightest concern for this kind of thing at all because for them dropping your convictions is the necessary prelude to dropping your shorts.

They are consumed with lust and they are consumed with coercion. We have a name for that.

But in order to keep up the pretense that they actually care about things like sexual consent, they rally to the cause of some sorority girl who had four tequilas too many at a frat party and wound up in the wrong bed. That, my friends, is supposed to be part of the rape epidemic and so we now have a law in California that requires an amorous couple on campus to obtain and grant a verbal green light after the third wink and before the first leer.

We have played this out long enough. Liberals now have enough trope to hang themselves with.

What that printer in KY should do is offer their services to every organization that gays hate, especially the crackpot groups and make sure that it is advertised. The gays are pretty likely to go away after that.

The liberal war on freedom reaches into places you’d never think about. I work in an industry where continuous surveillance of everyone and everything has become just a normal part of life. There are cameras everywhere. We don’t even think about it any more. As another example, I know a guy who is a 48-state truck driver. I was amazed at the degree of electronic surveillance those guys must endure, everything from electronic logs and GPS units to rollover alarms, radar controlled cruise controls, and e-mails that report them to their bosses every time they make a lane change without… Read more »

For liberals, morality = law, law = morality; and they regularly make it up as they go along. Genuine Law on the other hand is something they simply not tolerate, since it allows them no wiggle room for their promiscuous, arrogant pretensions.

Just curious: Why do you (seem to) disbelieve the “one in five” statistic? Have you found sources that present contradictory statistics? Do you find the statistic suspect because you find liberals suspect?

Actually, if we take the right seriously, this law should be a reason not to send your sons to college, lest they be preyed upon by the feminist succubi. But then maybe everyone is just nodding their heads there. While it’s always fun to get out our resentments about those liberal meanies, a google search reveals that there are rather few liberals actually supporting this law, with most of them making the expected criticisms. One I haven’t seen is that it won’t even work, as the problem with sexual assault on campus is that most of it goes unreported, and… Read more »

Matt, Unless it is “reported to authorities”, which means the official sphere for adjudication, then there is no objective criteria upon which to base the soundness of a report. Just because something is anecdotal does not mean it is wrong; it does mean that it is inconsistent with any scientific method for generating statistics of such data. The first step in the reporting of any crime is a a determination of whether there is objective factual support for the existence of said crime, either in reasonable suspicion leading to further investigation, or probable cause (reviewed and found as such by… Read more »

The majority of crimes of any type go unreported, save for those that are very hard to hide like murder. Sexual crimes have an element of shame which makes it worse. You can disregard that if you want, but in that case there is nothing more to say.

Jane Dunsworth
Jane Dunsworth

In that case, we only know that rape accusations are made more often than rapes are reported, not that rapes occur more often, since there is no way to determine whether a rape has occurred if no one with the power to determine whether a crime has occurred, has been informed of it. The most we have is claims and accusations, there’s no such thing as a real statistic about real unreported rapes. This is not to say that all unreported rape claims are not to be believed, but that purported statistics about unreported rapes cannot be relied upon for… Read more »

This is not to say that all unreported rape claims are not to be believed, but that purported statistics about unreported rapes cannot be relied upon for any practical purpose since they’re wholly unverifiable. Self-reports are actually a legitimate crime analysis tool, and the FBI runs a survey dedicated to collecting them. And it’s unwise, to say the least, to just dismiss everything we hear every time it runs afoul of our ideological loyalties. But what’s the goal? ” Do conservatives believe there is no problem, or do they have a different way to address it?” Conservatives have been addressing this issue for years. We have the solution. We have been screaming from the rooftops, but it falls on deaf ears. – Take personal responsibility. Don’t get stupid drunk. Dont put yourself in an environment that puts you at risk. Own a gun. – End the hookup culture. End it. – Raise your sons and daughters with a moral foundation, preferably Christian, that stresses character, honor, and respect. Of course not. Why must you always come up with the most prejudicial possibility?

The goal is simply to say that if you’re going to address something, unreliable facts are not a good starting point. Is that really debatable?

Matt

Take personal responsibility. Don’t get stupid drunk. Dont put yourself in an environment that puts you at risk. Own a gun. Conservatives are accused of blaming the victim because while this is fine advice (save maybe for the gun, absent any qualifiers), it is not going to be followed all of the time by everyone, and sexual assault shouldn’t be the punishment for letting your guard down. As a policy to reduce sexual assaults, it’s not worth much. Conservatives tend to be far too interested in making sure everyone gets their punishments. Ending the hookup culture, if it actually exists,… Read more »

Matt,

Come up with reliable ones using reliable means, I’m surprised that you lack the imagination to come up with that answer yourself, or have any reason to doubt that that would be mine.

Why do I have to convince you that I don’t care about rape? What have I done to give you the impression that I am a heartless and amoral monster? Because that’s what the implication that I’m trying to get everyone not to care about rape amounts to.

Two things here. First is that I don’t know what you’re (or conservatives in general) trying to do here, which is why I’m asking. Second, disputing that there is a social problem of campus rape doesn’t mean you don’t care about rape, though some of the more excitable feminists might say so.

On the statistics, just come clean. What are, to you, the legitimate statistics and what do they tell us?

“Conservatives tend to be far too interested in making sure everyone gets their punishments.” Here is a prime example of declaring that I am blaming the victim. I am not. You seem to be interested in seeing the worst in those you disagree with. Where did I say that rape is punishment for not following certain steps. Stop with the strawmen and engage the argument. All the things I mentioned will reduce the incidents of sexual assault significantly. And when there are bad actors, and there always will be. Then you punish them (the rapists) to the fullest extent of… Read more »

Let’s try this. Imagine there was a plague of highway robbery. Anytime you traveled, there was a good chance (10%?) that you would be accosted and robbed by thugs. No one would, in response to this, suggest as a public policy idea that travelers should arm themselves or just not travel at all. Those might be suggestions for coping with or mitigating the threat, but not policy to deal with the problem. If the authorities came out and said this as an official response, it would effectively be an admission that they had no control over the territory in question.… Read more »

Matt, actually the police do give advice regarding personal behavior when it comes to personal safety. It seems to me David R. was also giving advice rather than recommending a public policy. If everybody took the best part of that advice the question of public policy would be moot. Of course everybody will not, hence we want a public policy, but not one that misrepresents the nature and scope of the problem.

“Second, disputing that there is a social problem of campus rape doesn’t mean you don’t care about rape, though some of the more excitable feminists might say so.” Where did I dispute that there’s a social problem of rape? I still think that reading such a ridiculous notion into my questioning of one particular statistic and its methodology implies that you have an extremely jaundiced view of my thought processes, even if that is merely a function of lumping me together with other people who are presumably silly enough to think that this would be the one time in history… Read more »

the decision of California to require a verbal yes at every stage of sexual activity

For this to have meaning, there must be a government body somewhere that is drawing up a list of “stages”. Otherwise, the law would be nonsense.

Will they be indicating which ones can or can’t be left out? Will intercourse be unlawful if any actions are carried out in the wrong order? Is there a menu of government-approved options?

Is a regulator somewhere busy drawing up a list of body parts and sorting them into categories?
