Our Lord quoted the prophets, saying that it is written there that “they shall all be taught of God.” Jesus interpreted this as meaning that everyone who had heard, and has learned from the Father, comes necessarily to Jesus Christ. This is not to be taken as meaning that anyone can just snap their fingers and say that he is of God. Only one man has seen God, and that is Jesus Christ. He has seen the Father. The man who believes therefore in this Jesus, this one has eternal life.
And Jesus adds here that He is the bread of life. He is the one who came down from heaven. He is the living bread, and the one who eats it lives for ever.
But this everlasting life is not accomplished with your mouth when your heart is elsewhere. The oldest hypocrisy in the book is the practice of feigning heart allegiance while making a great deal out of the externals required by God. To all such, the Word says that sacrifices and burnt offerings are not required, but a humble and a contrite heart. With such a heart – for no other kind is received kindly – come and partake.
