Pulpit Freedom

“Although it is true that the service of the Word also falls under liturgical rules, we must nevertheless concede at once that in preaching no unnecessary restrictions be imposed on the minister. More than with any other part of the service, in preaching the minister must produce the fruit of his own thinking and reflection, his own effort and meditation, and present it to the congregation. It is in the preaching of the Word, more so than in any other part of the service, that the subjective part of his aptitude, of his gifts and talents, and of his personality comes to the fore. And personal expression demands, above all, freedom” (Kuyper, Our Worship, p. 167)
