Indispensable Men

As God allows us to stumble toward more mature forms of worship and government, we must take great care. An essential part of cultural maturity in community is that places of honor will develop. This is inescapable. Jesus did not command the Jews to tear out the chief seats in the synagogues and to level everything. But He did command His followers to consider their hearts, and not to strive.

So the exhortation is to clothe yourselves in all humility. Whether the honor involves church office, solo parts in the choir, first place in the catechism class, ongoing labor in the ministries of the church, or any other good thing that might attract you as a fleshly bauble. We will not fight this by leveling everything, because then the fleshly heart takes pleasure in being more level than other people. We are to fight this by doing what Scripture requires of us — clothing ourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, clothing ourselves in all humility. Consider others ahead of yourselves. Do so in all things.

The Bible says that where you have selfish ambition, there you will find every evil practice. The quickest way to flood the church with fleshly iniquities is to flood it first with prideful and supposedly spiritual ambitions. May God long spare us from that type of prideful and faithless servant who assumes the work of the kingdom absolutely needs him. As one observer put it, graveyards are full of indispensable men.
