Pointing Away

Sharing Options

Both sacraments that God gave us were given to point us to Christ. They are not intended to make a statement about the condition of the person receiving the sacrament. Rather, they create a covenantal obligation for the recipient of the sacrament to live a life that points—by faith—to the same thing that the sacrament does, which is to Christ. This is the case for both baptism and the Lord’s Supper. The water of baptism points to Christ, and the bread and wine point to Christ. If we receive these sacraments as worthy receivers, which can only be done by faith, then our lives point where the water does, and where the wine and bread do. The sacraments, in other words, point away.
