God has given us a holy day every week, on the first day. Each week we are reminded that we are living in the new heavens and the new earth. Each week we remember that just as God rested after His work of creation, so Jesus Christ rested after His glorious work of re-creation. In the old covenant, rest was a glorious ocean into which all the labors of the faithful would flow. But now, in the new covenant, rest is the fountainhead from which all believing labors overflow. We are living in a world made new.
We also have the privilege of marking this glorious truth annually. He is risen; He is risen indeed. This Easter week is a glorious and most holy week. This is not one more day among many ordinary days. This is not one more Sunday, as glorious as every Lord’s Day is. This is not the culmination of Jesus Appreciation Week, as some well-intentioned brothers have advertised recently.
We commemorate birthdays, anniversaries, the formation of nations, and much more. It is right that we do so. But if we were to cease commemorating everything else, this one day should remain. This is the day when God remade the world. This is the day when we all were justified. This is the day when death died and went down to hell. This is the day when believers all around the world say He is risen indeed.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
