A Song I Really Like for Some Reason

Jokes I Like to Tell

A long suffering elementary teacher once had a stand-out exasperating student. He never seemed to be paying attention, he sat in the back row every chance he got, and yet never seemed to pay the price when it came to his grades. She couldn’t tell if it was a function of sheer luck, or if he was somehow furiously studying whenever she wasn’t looking.

He had a casual demeanor in everything he did. He would slouch into the classroom, he would always forget his books, she had to tell him constantly to take his hands out of his pockets, and so on. The expression on his face sent a constant message to all the adults in his life that they should ask someone who cared. If ever there were a nonchalant student out there, this was the kid.

One day the class was reviewing their parts of speech in preparation for an approaching test. As they were going over the study questions, the teacher noticed this boy squirreling around in the back, whispering, passing notes, and generally not paying attention. As she watched, she got more and more frustrated at her inability to catch him out.

Suddenly, inspiration struck. She would pop him one with a pop quiz. “Billy,” she said sharply, “stand up.” His name was Billy. Billy stood up, very slowly he stood up, and then thrust his hands into his pockets. The teacher then noticed that he had somehow acquired a toothpick. A toothpick! Dangling out of the corner of his mouth.

“Billy,’ she said, convinced she had him now. “Give me two examples of pronouns.”

He grinned widely. “Who? Me?”
