Water Does Not Replace the Word

“In 1 Corinthians 1:17, Paul makes a special effort to show that water baptism is not to be included as a part of the gospel. ‘For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lesty the cross of Christ should be made of no effect” (1 Cor. 1:17). But Christ had sent him to: ‘open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me” (Acts 26:18). Obviously it is possible to be forgiven and sanctifed before undergoing water baptism (just as Abraham was forgiven and sanctified before he was circumcised). Christ sent Paul to preach this repentance, forgiveness, and sanctification. But Christ did not send Paul to baptize in water” (To a Thousand Generations, p. 56).
