“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)
Growing Dominion, Part 93
“Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established” (Prov. 15:22).
Taking this together with other proverbs about business, we know that counsel is not simply a quantitative thing. In a multitude of counselors there can be pandemonium too. A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure. So there is a way of adding counselors which is simply adding to the confusion. People can heap up false counselors to suit themselves, just as they heap up false teachers. Rehoboam knew how to pick counselors from within his own little circle, and they told him just what he thought they would.
But there is a way of seeking out counselors that gives the benefit of triangulation. Different wise men give different perspectives, and each one adds to the blessing. Sometimes the differences are a corrective, and other times they provide an additional and complementary perspective. The wisdom of this proverb should be applied when a business is in the stage of forming a business plan, or when an existing business is on the verge of dramatic changes. Get wide and wise input.
