When you are discouraged, as one of God’s saints, you should strengthen your hands and weak knees. Whatever your circumstances, God has received you. See? you are here at this Table. You are welcome.
This is the opposite of the condition of a man outside of Christ. Whatever encouragements he might have, day to day, they are worthless in the light of God’s displeasure with him. What does the Scripture say? “God is angry with the wicked every day” (Ps. 7:11). He is angry with them when the sun is shining, and when the weather is nice. He is angry with them when they have plenty of food and money. He is angry with them when they seem to run everything, when they are lords on the earth . . . at least in their own minds. There is a serious disconnect between their actual condition and their perceived condition.
It is the same with discouraged saints, only running the other way. God has forgiven you. He has received you. He has brought trouble into your life so that you might learn to lean on Him in all your doing. He has you carrying the weight you are carrying in order to make you stronger. And He has done all this without abandoning you.
See? You are here. The Table is set, and if you are baptized and not under church discipline, this bread is for you. This wine is for you. So do you have troubles and discouragements? Then you need nourishment.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
