He Keeps the Soul

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 167

“A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent”

(Prov. 28:20)

One of the blessings that comes from Hebraic parallelism and its “thought rhymes” is the ability we acquire to distinguish, not just white from black, but white from off-white. Notice the two things that are contrasted here. A faithful man is contrasted with the get-rich-quick guy, and “abounding with blessings” is contrasted with a loss of innocency. A good conscience is therefore one of the characteristics of abundant blessing. A man who cuts corners to get the prize he is seeking (wealth right now) is going to cut off the corners of his conscience. Not only that, but as we learn two verses later (28:22) that such schemes are actually get-poor-quick schemes. When you sell your soul to the devil, you get ripped off. You don’t get what you sold it for, and he still keeps your soul.
