Getting the Direct Object Right

Sharing Options

Jesus said that it was the Father’s will that He, Jesus, lose no one that had been given to Him. He said further that it was the will of God that such individuals be raised up at the last day. Who receives this gift? Jesus said that it applied to everyone who sees the Son and believes on Him. Such a one will have everlasting life, and will be raised at the last day.

We cannot overemphasize this, or pay too much attention to what He actually says here. He says everyone who sees the Son, not everyone who sees himself seeing the Son. He says everyone who believes on Him, not everyone who believes himself to be believing.

The direct object of the verb see is Jesus Christ. The direct object of the verb believe is Jesus Christ. Reject every attempt to make you look somewhere else. It is an attempt to undermine your faith and confidence. When you look at Jesus Christ, like Peter, you can walk on water. When you look anywhere else – at the waves, at your feet, at the motives of your heart – you will sink like an anvil.

Everlasting life is set before you. Salvation is on the table. Do not close your eyes to look inward as you eat – your table manners will suffer. Look to the food. Look away from yourself. This is bread from outside this world. This is wine from the vineyards of God in heaven. Look to Jesus Christ in heaven. Believe on the one God has sent. Look forward to everlasting life.
