Decorated Damnation

The apostle Paul speaks of how the Corinthians came together at the Table in such a fashion as to do more harm than good (1 Cor. 11:17). How are we to understand this? How may we prevent falling into this sin ourselves?

God has created us as material creatures, and so we cannot worship Him in a way that does not use matter. There is no such thing a purely spiritual worship for us. At the same time, there is such a thing as pure spiritual worship for us, and so that should be our great interest.

Pure spiritual worship is not that which does not involve bodies and matter, but rather the use of all the matter that forms us and which we touch in a way that proceeds from true, regenerate hearts. Without that new heart, without true conversion to Jesus, a man defiles all that he touches. With it, he consecrates all that he touches.

The human heart is therefore the catalyst in every kind of worship that God receives. The human heart is what proves the will of God, what is good, and acceptable, and perfect. But we cannot do this to or for ourselves—our own hearts are out of our reach. And so this is why the Scriptures teach us that regeneration is the work of the Spirit, and it is a work out of the control of mediating priests Without the Spirit of God, the only thing a priest can do is decorate your damnation.

So with evangelical faith, come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
