Burgundy Dishwater

This Supper is not a covenantal meal in the midst of a non-covenantal world. Everything we do is covenantal, which is another way of saying that everything we do is a form of fellowship, or a form of partaking.

This even includes our sin. When we sin, we are trying to eat at another table in addition to this one here. But we cannot commune in two directions at once. One of the blessings that God gives us in this Table is an increased understanding and awareness of the radical antithesis between this Table and any of the fare offered by the world.

God offers bread and wine. The world offers you dishwater and sawdust cakes. But you must know this—the difference between the two is not apparent to us, if we labor to understand it in our own power. The dishwater often has a deep burgundy color, the result of a lying use of food coloring. The package on the sawdust cakes tells you that it is rich in fiber, and the simple are taken in.

But as the grace of God feeds you, He strengthens you, and you start to perceive the world’s wisdom, all its wisdom, as just lying and deceitful scraps. You do not need vain speculation—feed on Christ. You do not need the entertainments of Vanity Fair—feed on Christ. You do not need worldly philosophy—feed on Christ. You do not need anything derived from the other Table except a spirit of repentance for having ever been attracted to it.

Open your mouth. Ask Christ to feed you and strengthen you to be able to see anything in your life that you should be tired of by now.
