“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Food and Drink #9

“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein” (Heb. 13:9).

The author of Hebrews tells his readers to stay away from various weird doctrines. Weird doctrines are the kind of thing that carry people about—wafting them here and there. Fads were not a modern development. And it is interesting that the first instance of this kind of thing that comes to his mind is a food fad. Instead of being wafted by the Bible diet de jour, he tells us that the heart should be established by grace, and not by foods. There is a kind of mind that flips this around, and wants the heart to be established by food—wants to be in with God by means of what is put into the mouth. The promises made on behalf of diet spirituality are often extravagant, but they bring no profit to those who are occupied with them. We eat multiple times a day, so someone who is occupied with food fads spends a lot of time on it. But what does he have to show for it? No profit.

Would be helpful to tag this one with “Grace and Peace” so folks who are following that thread can find it. (And mightn’t hurt to tag the rest of the “Food and Drink” G&P episodes with “Creation and Food,” except it’d be more work.)
