Most of the books I select for my “book of the month” pick are not titles from Canon Press. Now I know that I have lost my treasure in Heaven even for mentioning this, but I still thought it should be pointed out. It is also the case that I don’t generally pick books written by family members, at least not until now.
But my daughter Bekah Merkle has written a really good one, and as I was looking around for what to plug this month I thought to myself that an exception to my general and proven pattern would be forgiven this time. After all, it is about time.
Eve in Exile asks and answers a very important question, which is “what are women for?” She gives an overview of the different waves of feminism, and shows how these unbiblical reactions were reactions to patterns or types which were themselves unbiblical. In other words, to answer the question about what women are for, it is necessary to resort to the Scriptures first. Conversations with your great-grandmother about how it was in Edwardian times might provide supplemental insights, but it also true that you just might find yourself tapping into a bit of crazy from another era.
Engagingly written, and very funny in places, this is a book to have your teen-aged daughter read. It is striking how feminist assumptions can creep into very conservative Christian circles, and you may discover that your daughter has a lot of questions that you didn’t know she had. This book answers them. This is also a good book to share with an unbelieving friend who may have all kinds of skewed assumptions about “life in the patriarchy,” and has wondered more than once why you seem so cheerful.
In short, great Christmas present for somebody you know. You know a girl, right?
I’m calling it my book of the year. Guess that means I liked it twelve times as much.
Due in a week, possibly somewhere over the Pacific currently?
I read this book and it is fabulous!
It is incredible how Rebekah writes in such a whimsical way and still manage to maintain such rooted and deep convictions. What an encouragement and joy this was to read!
