Worshiping in the Will of God

Sharing Options

As faithful worshiping Christians, we all want to live our lives in the will of God. Unfortunately, this has led many Christians into the unbiblical practice of trying to find the will of God beforehand, in order to be able to go do it. This practice seems very pious, but it actually little more than a return to the pagan practice of divination. Whether it involves opening the Bible at random, or waiting for spiritual impulses, or resting upon coincidences, all such practices are simply manipulative superstitions. Such practices appear devout, but are simply recycled paganism.

Even unregenerate men can want to know the mind of God on the course of future events. In fact, unregenerate men are insatiably curious about such things. But this neglects what Scripture tells us over and over again about the will of God. God’s will is for the individual believer is for him to become a certain kind of person. We tend to focus on the location, occupation, destination, and so on, while the Spirit of God is at work in us to mold in us the character of wisdom He desires. We want to know His hidden decrees, which He will not reveal, and we want to ignore His Word, which He has revealed.

This is God’s will for you—that you be holy. This is God’s will for you—that you avoid sexual immorality. This is God’s will for you—that you be wise, understanding the times, and avoiding dissipation. This is God’s will for you—that you stand firm, mature and confident. This is God’s will for you—that you rejoice all the time, that you pray constantly, and that you give thanks for everything.

God’s will as revealed has far more to do with how you are what you are, than it does with where you are, or what occupation you pursue. And you are worshiping here today, which is the will of God for you—provided you are coming with wisdom.
