“Jesus tells us that the hireling does not care for the sheep the way a good shepherd does. In saying this, the Lord was teaching in effect that the ministry cannot be allowed to become a profession. Despite this severe warning, the modern Church has steadily drifted into a compromise with what we might call ministerial professionalism. Pastors went to seminary the same way that doctors went to med school, and it is not long before they think of themselves as occupying the same social strata. Seeing this problem, many Christians have reacted away from this in an egalitarian direction, thinking that if ministerial professionalism is the problem, then the solution must be to try to achieve a lack of professionalism” (Mother Kirk, p. 185).
