Covenant Renewal Worship

Sharing Options

As we change our order of worship, we need to be mindful of the fact that we do not change for the sake of change — we are not merely rearranging the furniture to keep from becoming bored. That is a mentality that comes from restless spirits, who think that spontaneity is the justification of all religious feeling and emotion.

What we are doing is done in the spirit of reformation, not the spirit of restlessness. We are trying to conform what we do in worship more and more to the pattern of the Word.

A good part of this requires thought and work on your part, as the congregation of the Lord. Worship is no spectator sport, where the trained professionals up front do the work. All God’s people are involved, down to our little ones. So this order of worship will require work to learn, but to the extent it is biblical, it also requires on-going work week to week, Lord’s Day to Lord’s Day.

You are called to worship — God summons you.

You recognize you are in no fit condition to approach Him, so you take care to confess your sins. This fulfills the point of the guilt offering in the older covenant.

God demands entire worship — He accepts no partial offerings. This is the fulfillment of the ascension offering, where we ascend before God in the smoke of the whole burnt offering.

With this done, and with this understanding, God sits down with us at His table, and graciously communes with us.

He then sends us out into the world, to carry the benefits of what He has given us. And this is worship which transforms the world.
