Justice, Mercy and Humility

Sharing Options

Because God is the author of sacraments, He is the one who governs and regulates them. In some matters, He doesn’t care how we set the Table—He doesn’t mandate a white tablecloth, for example, or silver trays for distribution. He requires that what we do in this regard is filled with reverence and godly awe, but there are various ways in which that can be communicated. He leaves that sort of thing up to us.

What does He require? He requires bread, and He requires it be broken. He requires wine, and he requires that it be blessed wine; He calls it the cup of blessing. He requires the words of institution that I am about to speak, and He requires a response of faith and love from you. He has shown you, O man, what He requires—do justice, love mercy, and walk with humility. All of that is present here.

The cross of Christ was perfect justice and Christ fulfilled the demands of that divine justice by laying down His life on your behalf. Mercy is here as well—this is the new covenant mercy seat. Humility is of course present—the eternal Son of God died on a cross in order to secure your forgiveness, and He died in such a way as to establish the sacrament that is celebrated here, so that you could be reminded, in a glorious and fulfilling way, what kind of Savior you have. Justice, mercy, and humility are all offered. It is no injustice to receive it, when you receive mercy, you also extend it, and it is grievous pride to reject the humility of God. So, come, and welcome.
