Worship As A Shield

God has never done a work of reformation in the world where that work had no critics. One of the signs of thorough-going reformation is when those involved in the work of reformation respond in grace and wisdom.

This is not the same as agreeing with the critics and joining them, but it is the recognition that a work of the Spirit of God does not need to be propped up with the spindley support of our egos. In other words, we need not be threatened by anything. As the Israelites marched around Jericho, I dare say that some people on top of the walls were critical.

As you come to worship now, know that God is the center of all that you do; He is to be the object of Your attention. But know also that whenever a significant number of saints make God the center of their attention, those saints become the object of someone else’s attention, with criticism, derision, slander, and mockery following.

Pray that the name of God would be vindicated in all things, this included, and pray that He would use such things to humble us. We should know that if God were to undertake such criticism of us, the report would be far worse than what it is now.

And so we pray to be vindicated, not for the sake of our own name, but for the sake of the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ. Lift up His name, but without a carnal, defensive spirit.
