Somebody Touched Me

In Luke 8, we are told the story of the woman with a hemorrhage who approached Christ in the press of the crowd, touched Him, and was healed. She came to him in true faith, but as she thought, anonymously, and yet was healed. But it was not a secret to Christ. He felt the healing power as it went out of Him.communion20elements20-20dickow

As we come to this Table, we do so in order to touch Christ. We handle the bread, and eat it, and we drink down the wine. We come in order to do this, and we need to remember that it is in the middle of a great throng. But regardless of the crowd, your purpose in it should be to touch Him individually. You should want more than to be among those who jostle Him. According to the disciples, there were many that day who pressed in on Him—He was touched in that way by a lot of people.

But in the midst of that press, Jesus suddenly asked, “Who touched me?” He asked this because He felt power (dunamis) go out of Him. Everyone denied it, and Peter expostulated with Him. Look at the crowd. But Jesus said, “Somebody touched me.”

And somebody had. More than that, a nobody touched Him. We are not even given her name. And yet the power of Christ came to her in the middle of that crowd, healing an affliction she had suffered for years.

You are here to worship the Father in the name of Jesus in the power of the Spirit. The first thing to remember is this. When you come, you should want to come in such a way as to touch the Lord. The hand you are to use to reach out is your faith, which is given to you that you may touch Him. You are here because you want to have personal contact with Him. Second, when you do, then you will be a recipient of His grace. Power, virtue, strength will be given to you, flowing from Him to you. And third, Jesus knows about it. There are no secrets here. The grace you desperately need is here, but none of it is given by accident.

So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
