The Oil of Anointing Doesn’t Make You Slick

“It must be acknowledged that our reservation concerning many of these novel ministry methodologies has nothing to do with preferring a traditional style of ministry over against a more contemporary emphasis. Contemporaneity is not the issue. Effectual Christianity will always prove contemporary to the unique mission-field given to it by Jesus Christ. Rather, the issue in view is the radical inconsistency that exists between the message of a bloody cross and the slick, sophisticated . . . methods of communicating it. Paul’s burden is to assert that true, apostolic ministry is characterized by an intimate correspondence of message and method; that thorough-going consistency is to exist between the word of the cross and its articulation” (Azurdia, Spirit Empowered Preaching, p. 83).
