In the area surrounding 1 Peter 3:10, the apostle Peter gives a wonderful set of exhortations on keeping your lips from speaking evil, and your mouth from telling lies. His section on avoiding a life of deceitfulness is a quotation from the Psalms (Ps. 34:13). But for those who are over-scrupulous about such things — it would be better to say scrupulous in the wrong ways — the occasion for David writing that psalm, according to the heading, was that time when he faked madness in the court of Abimelech, and was driven out. So that kind of thing must not have been what he was talking about in the psalm.

Not all killing is murder. Not all deception is lying.
Sadly, I’ve seen folks leave a church over a planned surprise birthday party for one of the elders — because, ya know, it was deceitful.
About as deceitful as their membership vows, I guess.
