Christ in the Sermon

“The task of the preacher of the Word is to expound the scripture in the midst of the worshipping Church, preaching in the expectancy that God will do, through his frail human word, what He did through the Word of His prophets of old, that God by His grace will cause the word that goes out of the mouth of man to become also a Word that proceeds from God Himself, with all the power and efficacy of the Word of the Creator and Redeemer . . . The task of preaching must therefore be undertaken, and the word of the preacher should be heard, in the expectancy that Christ the Mediator will come and give His presence where the Gospel is preached, and cause men to hear His voice through the voice of the minister” (Wallace, Calvin’s Doctrine of the Word and Sacrament, p. 83).
