Before forty ministerial students, he unveiled his suspicions when he put up the rhetorical question — ‘What can be said for homiletics?’ His revealing reply was ‘Not much’! On another occasion he was to refer to homiletics as ‘almost an abomination’. . . His objection to homiletics needs to be seen against how it is taught in many seminaries and Bible colleges. A mechanical approach to Scripture, failure to depend on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit during preparation and delivery, a greater reliance on academic tools than seeking the enabling of the Spirit: against such things he reacted” (Sargent, The Sacred Anointing, p. 180).
