Christopher Dawson once said that the Christian church lives in the light of eternity, and can afford to be patient. In a nation filled with men and women pursuing the gods of envy, mammon, malice, bloodshed and theft, this is important for us to remember. They are all caught up in the tyranny of the immediate, and as one writer said, they are not modern men, but rather momentary men. They can do nothing but be caught up in the moment. But in the midst of all their yelling, stratagems, threats, legislative initiatives and plans, what can we do? When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do (Ps. 11:3)?
Well, we can go to the house of God, and worship Him. Every Lord’s Day, God’s people have the enormous privilege of recalibrating their watches to the settings of heaven. Time to readjust. Time to rethink. Time for a reset. In patience possess your souls. Let us worship the triune God, and recall that our rhythms are completely different.
