The Weight of the Fruit, Not the Weight of the Tree

This call to worship is addressed to the children and young people who are privileged to grow up in the midst of the covenant, to those who are in covenant with the God of their parents. God calls us to this, and so we rejoice in it.

At the same time, always be wary of the sin of covenant presumption. This snare entangled our Jewish fathers many times, and the apostle Paul says that Gentile believers grafted into the olive tree would be vulnerable to the same temptations, and for the same reasons.

So remember always that Jesus Christ is the root and you are the branch. You do not support Him. He does not need you. The tree would not fall over without you. You do not bear the weight of the tree – rather, you are called to bear the fruit of the tree. This means you are to bear the weight of fruit, and not to bear the weight of the tree.

So grow up looking to Christ. Remember Him, acknowledge Him. Turn from every idol. Some idols of course are outside the covenant, trying to lure you away. But in the church today, tragically, many idols have been set up in various crannies and niches throughout the Christian world, and so you need not stray outside the covenant in order to be unfaithful to it.

Little children, keep yourselves from idols, wherever they might be.
