Have you quarreled with anyone this week? If you did, was it for the cause of righteousness, or was it merely because you wanted your own way on something?
If it was the latter, as it probably was, was the quarrel worth it? Did the quarrel bring you closer to God, establish you in His Word, fill your heart with His praises? Or did it merely make you sullen, and unwilling to walk as a Christian should walk?
Did the quarrel make your household a pleasant place to be? Were you kind to your husband, your wife, your children, or, this being the only alternative, were you unkind to them?
Did the quarrel bring rest to your soul, or turmoil? Was the quarrel last night or this morning, just in time to make you feel unfit to appear before a holy God?
As you assemble before the Lord to worship Him this Lord’s Day, whether you feel like it or not, know this one thing: you must put down all your pettiness — because your quarrels do not arise from a high view of right and wrong, but rather from a high view of your own comparative dignity and worth, which is what pettiness is. That high view of yourself is clutched in a grimy hand. So put it down and come, worship the Lord.
