The worship of God is not to be considered an ongoing response to what are called “current events.” At the same time, our worship is not detached from the earthly visitations of the sovereign God in heaven. The only way to keep this in balance is to remember that true worship drives the course of history, and not the other way around. History buffets and blows around every form of false worship. True worship is the helm of the world. So as you prepare for worship this morning, and for every worship service throughout the rest of your lives, remember these things.
First, right worship is central. Fanatical Muslim idolaters can at least follow an argument – if Allah is God, follow him. Our reply must be, if the triune Jehovah is the living God, then follow Him. Do not be distracted by appearances. It is better to have cloth wrapped around your head like a devout Muslim than to have your head stuffed with cloth like many American Christians. The worship of the Unitarian god of American civil religion is as idolatrous as the worship of Allah. Repudiate it at every opportunity.
Secondly, love your enemies. Pray that they would be made friends of God through the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, and pray that if God withholds His grace from them, and they continue in their idolatrous rebellion, that God would still vindicate His righteousness.
Third, gird up the loins of your mind, as Peter says. Pray to God, read your Bibles, study God’s ways, sing His psalms, throw yourself with zeal into the continued reformation of the church, shower love upon your wife, and lavish care upon your children. Restore your nation. There is no other way.
