The Lord Jesus is present here with us now, and He is altogether lovely. He visits us in our imperfections, but in the grace of God He does so in His perfections. God has not given us an adequate savior. He has not given us a “good enough” redeemer. The salvation that has been brought to us, and which is set before us on this Table in its appointed emblems, is a salvation that saves to the uttermost.
We are not just barely saved. Because we are saved in and through the perfections of Christ, it follows that we are perfectly saved. If you are saved at all, you are perfectly saved.
This can only be true because our salvation originates from outside us. If it had to arise from within, it could not arise at all. We know this as the wholesome doctrine of Scripture, but we also know it in our hearts. In our flesh, we all confess, dwells no good thing. We are corrupt in our nature, and so deliverance must come another place. This is the place we must be saved from, not the place where we can cobble together a salvation from surrounding materials.
We are taken out of the dungeon. We do not build a sky palace out of the rocks of the dungeon.
All of this is true because Jesus is a sufficient savior. Not barely sufficient, and not minimally adequate. He is infinitely and ultimately beautiful. He is altogether lovely. And not in some sentimental or effeminate way either. No, He is precise image of His infinite Father, and if we have beheld Him, we have beheld His Father. And of course, this is only possible if His Holy Spirit works in us to give us the eyes to see, the hands to receive, and the mouths to taste.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
Amen
