Reagan and Goldwater are the exception in the GOP, not the norm. In a related matter, my new voting registration arrived today marking me as “No Party” and it feels good to speak of the GOP as “they” rather than “we.”

I upvoted that, since that has been my attitude about the GOP for almost the entire time I have been registered as a Republican (which is to say, since I was able to vote).

At the same time — and without making any accusations about you yourself — I also know that a significant number of the people who will in the near future be (virtue-signaling) about their no-longer-GOP status will merely be letting the world know how much better they are than all those uncouth low-class Trump voters.

You folks are late to the party. Back in the mid 90’s the Dems were in charge and the Reps, led by Gingrich and his “Contract with America” promised us a veritable conservative paradise when and if they ever got back in power again. Then Bush got elected, and later the R’s got both Houses. And they spent our money like drunken billionaire frat boys in Vegas.

“Late to the party”? Me? Son (I can call you that, can’t I, seeing as you’re clearly younger than I?), I have despised the GOP establishment since Nixon was president — and I *emphatically* do not mean by that anything that a leftist would mean. What I mean is that it was clear to me (even when I was a kid) that the GOPe had no more faith in, nor love for, America than the openly leftist party did-and-does. Fair enough. So what did you do during all the non-Reagan years? Vote 3rd party?

Most of the time (*), I held my nose and voted for the guy with an (R) (**) after his name.

(*) In 2001, I voted for the (C)

(**) It’s a given that I will never vote *any* member of the Party of Abortion-and-Treason for *any* office.

At the same time, Goldwater was a libertarian, not a conservative, albeit that the distinction wasn’t so stark when he ran for the presidency. Were he still alive and “serving” in Congress, he’d be caucusing with the Dems, at least intellectually.

At least Denethor didn’t open the gates to let the Southrons in like Reagan did.

Well, I’ll agree Southrons can be a problem.

Saint Reagan was a twice-married former Democrat and former actor from the land of fruits and nuts. And his economics was all voodoo-ey and stuff.

If only the True Conservatives ™ had had hashtags back then, we could have had four more years of the godly Carter.
