Al Jolson in Blackface

Nettie Stevens
Nettie Stevens, looking at a bunch of nothing under her microscope.

So Google is apparently having trouble keeping up with our exact location as they keep barreling past various jerkwater junctions. Didn’t anybody tell them what the deal was supposed to be? This crazy train we are on stops for no man, and yet today Google tried to honor — I can barely type for wheezing — Nettie Stevens. She, together with Edmund Beecher Wilson, claimed that they had discovered what we now know to be the meaningless hetero-normative concept of sex differentiation based on XX and XY chromosomal bigotries. They pulled this stunt — get this, people — back in 1905. And people are still buying it! Google bought it!

In sexual liberation terms, we were scarcely out of the 1800’s, still in our nonage. We have progressed more than a century since then, and so we are plainly 111 solar-based knowledge units past all those prejudiceries.Nettie Stevens 2

Get a load of this picture of Nettie off to the right. That is correct, fellow revolutionaries! She clearly made up that XX/XY micro-aggression (the kind of aggression you can see with a microscope) because she was all bundled up in gender stereotypes. I mean, look at that hat. And her dress is buttoned up to the neck, as though Queen Victoria herself had just died a few years before this, which she had. Google is in thrall to a Victorian scientist.

Not at all like the sexy scientists in the realistic movies of today. You know, the kind that . . . not that sexy actually means anything anymore. Actually, never mind this line of argument. False alarm. Getting free of this XY foolishness requires constant vigilance. None of us are immune.

Still, for the most part we have liberated ourselves well past all that antiquated nonsense, and so it is past time for Google to get a grip. I propose heavy fines, at a level that Google would notice. I can scarcely believe they need to be instructed in this. Google most likely has an HR department the size of Rhode Island, and they should be every bit as progressive. Who let this get by them? Who was asleep at the switch? Don’t they have internal review processes?

Ignore what’s under the microscope. Ignore those people, like Nettie Stevens, who refused to ignore what was under the microscope. Relegate them to the disgraced position of those who first discovered the influence of the four humors. Particularly phlegm.

This is a new day. We turn away from our old bigoted benightedness, and turn our faces to the new dawn. We should expect that — within our lifetimes — Bruce Jenner will be seen as the same kind of sexual pioneer, doing for her kind the same kind of service that Al Jolson in blackface did for his fellow African-Americans.

For anyone else that thinks that Google Doodles are really annoying, you can block them by following these instructions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ET93OgVb0M

Ah yes, the subtle distinction between boring 19th-century “science” and exciting 21st-century “SCIENCE!” is important to observe.

The Google Doodle thing is a fantastic peek into the Silicon Valley zeitgest — it’s amazing what they don’t consider worthy of notice. The rule of thumb is that if they’re featuring someone you’ve never heard of, their primary claim to fame will be “prominent communist”.

(Hard to feel bad about them featuring Frankie Manning though. A blind pig still finds a few acorns now and then.)

Case in point, this reminds me of the Sunday that Google honored Cesar Chavez in order to uphold their tradition of ignoring Easter.

From Columbia University

It is highly recommended that anyone with female sexual and reproductive organs (uterus and cervix) should continue to see a gynecologist until they no longer have the organs to be screened.

Ever see children playing make-believe and then something happens that knocks them back into reality?

Let’s all pray that none of the dead cops in Dallas were black, gay, or transgender.

Heavy-handed cutsie! I like that you are walking the dog outside of your usual anti-gay/trans tone DW.

Ok, here’s a question I’ve been thinking about lately. As I understand it, the going dogma says that a transgender person is, and has always been, their currently declared gender. Put another way, someone’s gender is something they just ARE, and will (hopefully?) discover at some point and start living in accordance with. Put another another way, Jenner was ACTUALLY a woman in the 70’s (though a woman in denial). If that is true, then NOBODY actually knows for certain what their true gender is. Suppose you say you’re a man. Fine, but how can you be absolutely sure that… Read more »

Homer Simpson, as usual, said it best:

I think there are people who argue precisely that. They view their (and everyone’s) gender identity as being on a continuum and as being essentially fluid (assuming they are honest with themselves and have not been brainwashed into the Barbie and Ken dichotomy). My daughter knows young people who believe exactly this, and who demand an additional option for gender identification on forms. And I don’t think it is “undecided” either! All of this leaves me shaking my head and thinking I have lived too long. Nonetheless, I see a plus side in that these confused people are much less… Read more »

Jillybean, you haven’t lived too long. You are experiencing the glory of God right now. So keep smiling, laughing and spreading the good news to everyone who will listen — even the young people your daughter knows!
