Good golly, one Confederate statesman’s viewpoint from a single speech! Guess Lincoln was 100% justified and I should hate my ancestors then!

Chris, you never did get around to answering my question.

Since you know so much, which law firms do you think can do the necessary litigation?

We get it. You don’t like black men in positions of power. So what else is new?

Propublica is Soros-funded trash pretending to be independent investigative journalism. If they really cared about crooked politicians getting rich, they’d be covering Hunter/Joe and the Pelosi crime family 24/7.

Chris’ comment had nothing to do with anything in this post. Nor did his comments in the last “Letters” edition. He’s the latest troll who halfway pretends to be here for good faith discussion, but is the online equivalent of a rabid, toothless chihuahua.

I wonder if these people get sent here from Reddit or some “Examining Moscow” group. When the last few JV players tire out after being completely ineffective, new ones pop up with similar tactics and arguments.

I don’t really have a problem with the idea that maintaining slavery was a motivating factor in secession and that a high percentage of those supporting it believed in the ontological inferiority of black people.

I do wonder, though, in how many other contexts you’d consider the words of a vice president in a pandering speech to be morally definitive for an entire political party, let alone a national entity. Should we run the experiment with VP Harris?

Maybe those favoring secession held similar views to Lincoln on blacks but it’s nothing more than an assumption. And it’s clear the primary reason the North wanted to go to war was economic, like almost all aggressors in wars. It’s also clear states had the right to secede, and Lincoln’s arguments were spurious. Even ChatGPT, which is coded to support far left takes, admits that.

Jane, as Cherrera notes below, while slavery was a factor, economics were the main driving force. The federal budget before the war was over 85% southern taxes and tariffs. The loss of those funds would have crippled the federal government and the northern states economy. Even then, Congress gave away tax monies to businesses. The taxes were to be apportioned to allow the south to improve railroads and heavy infrastructure to improve their economy, but most of it went to northern railroads and industry instead. Please do run the experiment with Harris. I’ll be looking for your post next Tuesday.… Read more »
