Once a young man graduated with an engineering degree from MIT, and he did so with high honors. He was bright, industrious, and very ambitious. The fact that he had graduated at the top of his class, coupled with his natural self-confidence, perhaps made him feel that he was a little more in demand than he actually was.
As he was reaching the end of his first job interview, one with a very respected firm in his field, the hiring officer asked him what starting salary he was thinking. “Just ballpark, give me a range,” the man said.
Not wanting to appear too ready for the question, the young graduate paused thoughtfully, and then said, “Somewhere in the neighborhood of $150K a year, and up to $175K. Depending on the benefits package,” he added.
Now it was the interviewers turn to look thoughtful, and he paused for a moment.
“Well, what would you say to this? What would you say to six weeks vacation, 10 paid holidays, full dental, full medical, the company matching your contributions to your retirement account, and then a company car leased for your use every two years, say, a red Corvette?”
The young man sat straight up in his chair, and said, “Man! Are you kidding me?”
And the interviewer replied, “Well, yeah, I’m kidding. But you started it.”
