A couple of your sermons in the last year or two on the topic of forgiveness, my takeaway was that you would make a distinction that he refuses to, however: That forgiveness can be prepared but cannot be accomplished until the offender has repented. So if my friend steals my car, I should be ready to forgive him, willing to reconcile with him, but it would be nonsensical to run after him down the street crying “I forgive you” as he peels out of the neighborhood. If you owe me ten bucks, and I tear up the IOU, have I forgiven you? Yes. But if you don’t acknowledge the debt, are you forgiven? No. The receiving doesn’t have to happen in order for the giving to happen. And what else is there to call the giving? After reading Lawyer’s comments, both in the article linked to by Doug, and the one linked to by kyriosity, I remain unconvinced. As Jay Adams taught, and as I believe the Bible also teaches, forgiveness is part of a transaction that is initiated by repentance and results in reconciliation. It is interesting to note, that Lawyer apparently thinks it is fine for a husband, whose wife lied about her virginity prior to marriage, to think of his wife as a “schmo,” even after he has forgiven her. Are those airplanes or meteors?
Most likely airplanes, although in the mountains we do see satellites travel across a clear night sky but those are usually higher up and not moving as quickly.
Good article on forgiveness. The opening is significant. they can’t forgive because the person hasn’t asked for forgiveness; they can’t forgive because the person doesn’t show enough contrition in their confession, they can’t forgive because the person doesn’t acknowledge or understand the “harm done “in the event; they can’t forgive because “I’m really angry with him/her.” it is often true that we may not be contrite enough or fully understand the harm. So I came across this article about students at university failing with literacy.
Frustrating because she gets the problem, at least partly. But fails to comprehend the cause. She equates capitalism with low cost (which it commonly causes) and equates low cost with poor quality (which is someone’s the case) then says capitalism causes poor education. Though Marxism and postmodernism in education are actually the problem.
But most frustrating in that she cannot see that she is part of the problem. Susy can’t comprehend because she reads Facebook and Twilight, so get her to read trash and profanity instead.
