A Fine Response to Eastern Orthodoxy

Here is an audio recording of a fine treatment of Eastern Orthodoxy. It starts a little bit, but should be worth it to you.

Facebook’s “It’s Complicated” Relationship with the News

Here’s a very interesting (and helpful) article on how Facebook has its hands full trying to fight click-bait. For those of us just trying to figure out how in the world “algorithms” work, this may shed some light…

Not amused at Faith Trumps Fear. It’s clearly an attempt to suppress Trump support. Barring miracles (which God send!) Trump or Hillary is going to win. Both stink but in spectacularly different ways. If you can’t tell the difference, stay home. If you think government is the solution, stay home.

Have to agree with Rob here. All the site did was give a list of other candidates on the ballot, with nothing to indicate that any one of them might be a Christian (and therefore no longer “evil” by God’s intervention). Therefore, are not all but one candidate on the ballot a “lesser of evils?” (because one of them has to represent the most evil of the group)

That’s right. When have we ever voted for a non-evil candidate? To vote is to vote for the lesser of however many evils, no matter how much you like the evil.

Technically, nerdily, annoyingly true — but misses the bigger, better, nicer picture.
That’s like admitting that you married the least of evils, but she’s still evil — which will get you slapped, as it should.

If you have fundamental agreement on the key things, then you’re not focusing on the evility of the options, but rather on the best of acceptable options.

an attempt to suppress Trump? — wow, I didn’t get that as it’s purpose, but maybe you know better.

And suppressing would contradict the whole point by essentially using the same mindset of “lesser than two evils”, no?

I simply took it as “It’s better to not go the ‘lesser’ route, but pick the best of acceptable & available” — “so here are choices you might find good & available” — can that video be legitimately taken this way?

You correctly understood the text of the message. I was talking about the subtext. Yes, it does contradict the text.

Really disappointed that you would direct further attention to Paul Hastings. This “FaithTrumpsFear” nonsense is transparently an attempt for him to move up from state-level politics to the big leagues. To repeat what I said when this came up before —

As you watch this video, remember that this has two audiences:

One is you, the voter, to persuade you to join his vote bloc.

The other is political candidates, to persuade them that Paul Hastings can
deliver the support they need from the vote bloc he’s persuaded.

You aren’t the customer to him. You are the product.

Ashv, can you explain more? Who is this guy making these wacky arguments? What is he trying to get?

ashv

Reply to  jon

From what I can see he’s a media guy who worked in a state campaign and is basically advertising his media abilities to other people in politics who might want to hire his company. If there’s a better explanation, I’d like to hear it — but this is the only explanation I can think of for the way the site is structured. He’s not endorsing or evaluating any of the candidates, and he’s collecting per-state engagement numbers. He isn’t excluding people like (gay Mormon) Evan McMullin or pro-abortion candidates.

Thanks, I can’t argue, he mostly seems to be promoting himself. He appears to be a well-meaning christian; but I am surprised people find this persuasive in any way.

Is McMullin really gay?

He’s 40 and unmarried, and his mom’s in a lesbian “marriage”. What do you think?

I didn’t know about his mom. But I definitely know some 40 year old hetero guys who aren’t married–for whatever reason.

The internet is covered with headlines, “White Nationalist calls Evan McMullin gay” and I seriously thought for a moment, “I wonder if that’s our ashv!”

Nah, ashv’s a pure minded Southern Nationalist. Mere white nationalism opens the door to hordes of untouchables and that’s just not the dream.

Come on, you’re smarter than that. It’s not “untouchables” I object to.

It’s Yankees.

My position would be not to vote for either. Voting always involves voting for sinners, but people vary on whether they are headed towards God or away from God. And there is always a point at which a candidate is bad enough not to vote for him, even if his opponent is worse. Trump has claimed to be a Christian. There is nothing I have seen that makes it look like he knows Jesus. As such he needs to be rebuked by Christians for making this claim and Christians should steer clear of him. I would have more time for… Read more »

I’d vote for an honest lefty. In theory anyway. Never heard of one.

Edit: What about Jimmy Carter?

Okay, you got me. Nice man, upright mostly, and I’d still pick Trump over him.

Well I did say character and policies. Plenty of nice Christians who buy the media narrative but really shouldn’t be in politics.

Sorry. Not gonna waste my time listening to a rambling audio (*) — put it in writing.

(*) almost every recording is a ramble that wastes 6-10 times as much of the listener’s time as he’d spend reading it.

It’s actually quite good and pretty packed. Sure, not as packed as a written summary.

Faith Trumps Fear. (?) What “statistically significant lesson” did Ross Perot teach “us”?

Oh right, when the center vote is split, bald faced lying Bill Clinton can prevail in a presidential election.

‘Don’t think “Faith Trumps Fear” has learned that yet. Perhaps they should stop lecturing. ; – 0

I’m guessing that they learned lesson and are applying it. That is, they want Clinton to prevail.

I’m honestly seeking some help here. It it wrong? or unwise? (or both) to simply vote for whomever I think is (in this order): (1) voteable (my vote will actually be counted not thrown out & I think the candidate would take the office if elected, (2) acceptable as in passes my no deal breaker test for stuff like anti-abortion & pro whatever (3) best of the acceptable candidates? So is it stupid that I don’t give a hoot really about “chance” of winning? After all, couldn’t you logically say that any vote that’s not for the winning candidate is… Read more »

Perf’, Here is a Biblical concept: (that may or may not apply) Matthew 12 9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it… Read more »
