Jokes I Like to Tell

One fine Saturday, a little boy came into the house, walked straight up to his father, and asked, “Dad, where do people come from?”

The father looked up, startled, and thought to himself, so soon? He thought briefly about putting his son off with a joke, but then glanced up and saw his wife giving him a knowing glance from the doorway of the kitchen. Now is good, she seemed to be saying. The father sighed, nodded to his son, indicating that he should pull up a chair. The son obediently did so while father went and got some materials he had set aside for the time when this dreaded day finally arrived.

Despite his dread, he really did a good job. And despite his reluctance, once he got going, he became positively eloquent. It was, to be frank, really good. And, to be frank, being frank is what he was being. He could sense his wife’s approval emanating from the kitchen.

When he was done, and his son had said, gee, thanks, Dad, and got up to go, a thought occurred to him as his son was making his way back outside. “Just curious, son. Why did you ask?”

“Oh,” his son said. “Well, I was playing with the new boy across the street, the ones that moved in yesterday. And he said they came from Baltimore.”

The rendering of the cell in Simply Glorious looks like a satellite image of a Chicago suburb. It should come as no surprise how often we subconsciously create things that mimic the grand designs of our Creator, as we bear His stamp on our hearts.

Love the blog, Pastor Wilson, and I really enjoyed reading Ecochondriacs! There were parts in there that had me laughing so loudly that my wife had to come in from the other room to see what I was doing. I look forward to reading the rest of your books. God bless you and your family!

We heard Wiley speak last week, and regarding his article: it’s difficult to sum up his subject matter in such a short space, so the comment about refugees is either because the commenter doesn’t get the full scope of the thing, or she’s reacting reflexively against something that looks like “privilege”. The point is to make your household a productive household. Your children should have meaningful work. You should make an effort to stop being solely consumers. Whatever you can do to lessen your dependence on big, specialized companies, you should do. You should make some effort to expand your… Read more »
