Elizabeth’s Missed Opportunity? Is there anything to clarify? 😳. Uh?
It’s a GIF of Mr. Collins from BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth Bennett and she rejects him. He’s a combination of ignorance, arrogance, and a comical degree of servility toward anyone above him in rank. In Jane Austen’s words, he is “conceited, pompous, narrow-minded, silly.” Hence the sarcasm of her “missed opportunity.”
That’s Mr. Collins from the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. He’s a comic character and probably our esteemed host is slyly implying that many of our contemporaries resemble him.
