Why Did You Not Believe?

Jesus used to ask His disciples “why” questions. When they were afraid of their boat sinking, and Christ was asleep in the boat, He asked them why they were afraid (Matt. 8:26). When they were anxious about not having brought bread, He asked them why (Matt. 16:8). When Peter began to sink into the water he had been walking on, Jesus asked him why (Matt. 14:31).

Jesus asks us about our doubts in order to show that there is no real reason for them. When we doubt Him, He asks us why, and then we say ummmm.

You are Christian disciples, which means that you should be all in. You call yourself by His name, which means that you are holding nothing back. But because our our circumstances, because of the world, the flesh, and the devil, we will sometimes discover that we were not as all in as we thought we were.

In that shape, we come to this Table. We do not find ourselves banned from the Table  for the faltering, but rather we encounter a gentle admonition. Why did you take so long to come? In this context, the chiding of Jesus is encouragement. So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
