Vindication From the Presence

Sharing Options

In a world full of bumps and conflicts, we all want vindication. This is entirely natural, but we have to remember that the people who were entirely in the wrong want vindication as much as anybody else. In fact, they frequently want vindication much more than the innocent or wronged parties do. They demand it, they insist upon it, they hold their breath until they get it. But if you are wrong enough, the only way to get it is by re-writing the entire narrative in your own mind.

But the Scriptures speak of a vindication that comes from the presence of the Lord. God does vindicate men, but a moment’s thought should reveal that this means that God takes sides. When we speak an oath, or think one, in words like as God is my witness, we are inviting Him to come into our dispute, and to settle it. Given what actually goes on in our conflicts, it would be impossible for Him to come in and settle everything by saying, “We’re all saying the same thing, really . . . when you think about it.”

And even if you are right, as you adjudicate your own case in your own mind, take care that you don’t think the sorts of things that would make Aslan growl at you.

When you want vindication from the Lord, what you need to do is hold all your disputes, complaints, grievances, and anything else that is similar, and hold them up to the Lord on an open palm. If He decides for your adversary, it is all right because it was surrendered. If He decides in Your favor, it was from His presence.
