Through Composed

Okay, now it is time for a different kind of psalm. The previous two were metrical psalms, and the tunes were fuguing tunes — very popular in early American music. But there is another way to sing psalms as well, one which enables your people to get closer to the text, and to store up Scripture in their hearts. This is Psalm 149, and it is what is called a “through composed” psalm. This setting was composed by David Erb, our music minister. The text is straight out of your English Bible, and works through the entire psalm. The advantage is that in learning the song you are memorizing the psalm, and not just a metrical paraphrase of it. This is not a criticism of the metrical psalms, which have their own glories, but this kind of psalm-singing does have its peculiar advantages. This setting is not found in the Cantus, but you can find the notation for it here.
