Thin Soup Preferred

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 92

“Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith” (Prov. 15:16).

We have already seen earlier in this chapter (v. 6) that the revenues of the wicked bring trouble with them. Here in this passage we are taught to make a double comparison, using two variables. It should be obvious that to be wealthy and blessed by God is better than to be wealthy and cursed by Him. In the same way it would be better to be poor and blessed by God than to be poor and cursed by Him. But we are given here a means of “weighting” these values when we are told that it is better to be sitting down to yet another thin soup meal, and the ability to give thanks for it, than to have mounds of treasure, and trouble along with it. This teaches us what our priorities must be.
