The Gift of Faith and Joy

Sharing Options

If there is any good in this life, it is enjoyed as the gift of God. If God gives the gift, and the capacity to do more than just hold that gift in your hand, then joy is possible. This is true of our physical life, our physical food, and it is true of our spiritual life and our spiritual food.

“I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God” (Ecc. 3:12-13).

A man should eat and drink, but to enjoy the good of our labor is not ours to command. God must give it. Just as a man might have millions of dollars, and no capacity to enjoy, so also many have come to this Table, with the riches of Christ set before them, and it is all useless because they have no faith. And even that faith is the gift of God, lest any should boast.

What does that faith do? It sees, knows, and understands that God is the giver of all things. This is the first day of the week, the weekly anniversary of the creation of the material universe. This is the day when God first spoke everything that is into being. This is also the day when God recreated the whole universe in the resurrection of Jesus. This being the case, how is possible for us to enjoy anything unless God gives us that gift? The grace of God is here—and in blessing you, the bread is more than just bread, and the wine more than just wine. Your faith receives God’s grace. So come, and welcome.
