The word anthropoktonos means murderer, and is used three times in the New Testament, with all uses being by the apostle John. Interestingly, this appears to be the fundamental sin that the devil is charged with. The first use is from John 8:44. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.” And then the word is used twice in 1 John 3:15. “Whoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.” Although John is applying this to anyone who hates like this, the diabolical ancestry of the sin is plain. Such haters are like Cain, and Cain was like the wicked one (v. 12). Those who do wrong are of their father the devil, and the first place this shows up is in the sin of hateful envy that drives to murder.
