When we commune with God, it is always because He gives Himself. It is always because He reveals Himself. It is always because He meets with us in accordance with His promises, and it is because we believe those promises.
It is never because we have captured Him. It is never because God was successfully enclosed within a box. He commanded the Temple to be made, and yet the Most High does not dwell in temples made by men. He commanded the sacrifices of the old order, and yet sacrifices and burnt offerings He did not require. He commanded us to honor and revere His Scriptures, and yet when we read them with the wrong kind of heart, they are a barrier to our knowledge of Him.
It is the same here, with the bread and wine. Has God promised to meet us here? He most certainly has. And for those who think that He is contained by these little cups, or that He rests beneath these white napkins, you are missing the point entirely. Not only are you missing the point, you are missing the Christ. Your God is here, but always in accordance with His nature and character, and always as the God of Scripture. The religious wit of man has never figured out how to weave His promises into a net that can catch Him, and make Him do forgiveness tricks for us.
The only cup that really holds the blood of Christ is the cup of true evangelical faith. The only platter that truly holds His broken body is the platter of real faith. So come, commune with your God.
