“There are only two established sacraments in the Christian Church, which are baptism and the Lord’s Supper. But the whole world is sacramental, teeming with metaphor. To come to a fuller understanding of this, we should seek to grow in our knowledge of the two formal sacraments that have been placed within the Church. Baptism and the Lord’s Table have the Lord’s promises attached to them, and when approached rightly, they nurture and instruct us in this way of thinking. They enable us to see what is occurring throughout the rest of our lives. Thus, table fellowship with friends is not a sacrament, but it is sacramental. Sex is not a sacrament, but it is sacramental — a great mystery, as Paul would say. Giving birth is no sacrament, but motherhood is certainly sacramental” (Mother Kirk, pp. 93-94).
