Take It From There

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

The Basket Case Chronicles #70

“But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called everyone, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches” (1 Cor. 7:17).

Paul concludes his passage on mixed marriage and divorce with his statement of a particular principle, one that serves as an introduction of his next point, which is in another area of life. That next point concerns the differences that existed between Jew and Gentile, between circumcised and uncircumcised.  The principle is that every Christian should remember that God takes us from where we are, and not from where we should have been.

God is in the process of redeeming a fallen world, restoring it, which is not the same thing as arranging do-overs. When Paul says “so let him walk,” he is saying that each one should walk from where he is. Tying this in with what went before, where were you when the Lord first called you? Halfway through the divorce already? A single mom? Married to an atheist college professor? What Paul ordained in all the churches is that we should take it from there.
