The various aspects of our worship service were shown forth in a type in the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. We come before God confessing our sins, which is the guilt offering, and we offer up the name of Jesus Christ, which cleanses all our guilt. Then our service corresponds to the ascension offering, sometimes called the burnt offering. We ascend to the Father, as smoke ascends from the altar, and through Jesus Christ, we are a sweet smelling savor to Him.
We come now to the portion of the service which corresponds to the peace offering. In this offering, God communes with the worshiper, and sits down and eats with him. When the two disciples from Emmaus recognized Jesus, they hastened back to Jerusalem that night in order to tell the others. When they got there, they heard news that the Lord had appeared to Simon. They then told their story, and how the Lord was known by them in the breaking of the bread. When they had said this, the Lord appeared to them all, and what He said to them was significant, and He says it again now. His words were, “Peace be unto you.” The disciples then were terrified, but the Lord calmed their fears. Let Him do the same now.
This is a table of peace, not war. This is a table of resolution, not conflict. This is a table of kindness, not malice. This is a table of reconciliation, not estrangement. This is the table of everlasting life. As you partake, peace be unto you.
