We now observe the Supper of the Lord at the conclusion of every worship service. Do not drift into the sin of thinking that this is a mere routine.
What is actually happening is that God is performing the spiritual equivalent of open-heart surgery on you, and He is doing it now on a weekly basis. He does not do this because all His previous operations were failures, but rather because a whole series of reconstructive surgeries are necessary. Before the operations began, we were a mess. Apart from Him, our condition was desperate.
Are you a sinner? This is no barrier to the Table. Are you unworthy? Then welcome, it is just for you. Are you crushed with your failures, and do you need His hand to put it all right? Then this is a table set for you, in the presence of all your enemies, including the internal ones.
But if you are fighting and hating Him as you partake, then a deep fear should overtake you. When rebellion looks into the cup, rebellion sees damnation there. But even in this situation, the solution is not to refrain from eating and drinking. If you are a covenant member, you have an obligation to eat and drink. But you also have a profound obligation to repent as you do so.
So in a real sense, we do not fence the Table. The Table is the fence, and it was not established by us. The Body does not protect the Table; the Table protects the Body.
